Nuts for Your Heart

For many years, people were told that nuts were not a good idea if they wanted to protect their heart. Dietitians worried that nuts were too high in fat. What was missing from the discussion was the fact that many nuts contain healthy fats that are actually good for the heart. Walnuts are especially heart healthy, and there is a lot of research to prove it.

Walnuts

Four to five servings (2 to 3 ounces each) a week can have a beneficial effect on blood lipids and lower the risk of coronary artery disease. In practical terms, that means about a handful of walnuts (8 to 16) on a regular basis.

Downside: Calories. Compensate for the additional calories by cutting back on sugar and other carbohydrates. Fortunately, a “nut diet” rarely causes weight gain.

Cost: In bulk, approximately $25 to $30 for a month’s supply
